Restore Your Smile with Lifelike, Durable Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps that are carefully designed to cover a tooth following treatment for trauma or decay. They look natural, and provide restored comfort and balance to your bite. At Elm Dental, we offer crowns made from a range of materials, including tooth-colored porcelain and zirconia. Dr. Yelena Gutnichenko works closely with dental crown patients to determine which material will perform best and look most natural within their smiles. A Closer Look at Dental Crowns

A dental crown being placed over a toothAfter removing all decayed or damaged portions, Dr. Gutnichenko will reshape your tooth to accommodate a crown. After your tooth has been prepped, she will take impressions and send them to our partner lab. In the meantime, she will provide a temporary crown. Technicians will craft your crown based on these impressions. Typically, it will take about three to four weeks for the crown to be completed. When your crown is ready, Dr. Gutnichenko will make sure it fits perfectly before attaching it to your tooth with dental cement. Next, she can make any necessary refinements to help you achieve a balanced and comfortable bite.

Crowns are usually the final step after completion of a root canal, a process of eliminating advanced decay and preserving the healthy outer structure of a tooth. We can also provide an implant-supported crown to replace a single missing tooth.

Exceptional Aesthetics

Dr. Gutnichenko and our partner laboratory work very carefully to make sure that your crowns look like a natural match to the rest of your teeth. Because we work with a local lab, we can collaborate more effectively. We will also evaluate your bite alignment to make sure that your new crown maintains the force of your bite, and does not place undue pressure on your jaw joints.

We offer crowns made from several different materials, and will work with you to determine the type of crown that is best suited to your cosmetic goals and function. Our options include:

  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM): PFM crowns are one of the most common choices. The metal base is very sturdy, and the porcelain shell will match the color of your smile.
  • Zirconia: Zirconia is a type of porcelain that looks highly realistic, while providing excellent durability.
  • IPS e.max®: Like zirconia, e.max® crowns will blend seamlessly with your smile. This material also has a slight translucency, giving your crown a very natural-looking sparkle.
  • Gold: All-metal crowns might be recommended for back teeth, because they can withstand large amounts of pressure.

Other Applications

Crowns have many applications in addition to restoring damaged teeth. If you have a severely worn or disproportionately short tooth, a crown can improve the force of your bite and reduce pressure on your jaw. Dr. Gutnichenko can also use crowns for cosmetic purposes. These restorations can cover intrinsic stains and give irregular or disproportionate teeth a more attractive appearance.
